Course summary

Session 1 - Understanding burnoutIn session 1, we will explore the concept of burnout from starting with what we think burnout is and delving into the science behind it. We will explore how stress and burnout are related to one another and how they are also very different things. We will also spend some time in this session assessing your own levels of burnout using a clinical assessment tool.

Session 2 - What causes burnout and what keeps it going
In session 2 we will begin to look at what causes burnout and what keeps it going. We will work though the connection between thoughts, feelings and behaviours and begin to identify which areas are causing you personally the most distress. We will also take a look at the stress cycle (drawing on the model by Nagoski) and how to complete it so that we can find a way back to a state of restfulness.

Session 3 - Increasing awareness and why simply getting enough rest is not the answer
In session 3 we will explore ways to recover from and prevent burnout. We will talk through why burnout doesn’t get better by itself and what treatments are out there. We will also begin to identify your own personal coping mechanisms in the fight against burnout.

Session 4 - Planning for the future: preventing burnout not just healing from it
Our final session will be a review of the key themes and skills taught in this four-week course. We will guide you in creating your own personal plan going forward. This will highlight your pressure points, the take home messages and tools, techniques & practices you want to build on and take away - to help you feel more confident.

Creating community

When you stop living on stress and adrenaline, you may feel emotional, spiritual and physical discomfort (it’s not unlike putting out a fire—the smoke makes it hard to breathe for a while). But that discomfort is worth it if you can finally get calm and comfortable in your own skin
— Brene Brown

In addition to the four weekly 90 minute sessions, we will create a private online community so that you can interact and connect with fellow group-members, sharing challenges and wins, as well as benefiting from peer support, for the course duration.

The therapist will be available to respond to any questions within the online community, to troubleshoot and offer further specialist support for ongoing challenges throughout the four weeks.

Practicalities

Course sessions will be held on Mondays 15:30-17:00 with the first workshop scheduled on Monday March 7th. We have arranged to deliver sessions at the end of the workday with the aim of making it as easy as possible for people to be present both at home and at work. We have also designed a tailored workbook to guide you through each session, with space to reflect after sessions on ideas and strategies we discuss and experiential exercises and meditations included in each workshop.
